Co-operative Societies a Panacea to Ribaa… Says Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar

Bayero University, Kano Official Bulletin 2 Vol. XXXVI No. 26 Bulletin Friday, 23rd June, 2017 n Islamic scholar, Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, has Aurged Nigerian Muslims to form co-operative societies as a step towards purging out ribaa (interest) dealings with banks and other financial th institutions. Speaking on Saturday, June 10 , 2017, nd during the 2 Annual Ramadan Public Lecture organized by the Islamic Forum of Nigeria in conjunction with Freedom Radio, Rahama Radio, Ja'iz Bank and IIIBF, Dr. Bashir, who is the imam of Alfurqan Mosque in Kano, said Muslims must avoid interest in all its ramifications. The lecture was held at Mahmud Tukur Theatre 'B', Old Campus. Presenting a paper titled: “Matsayin Musulumci Akan Tanade-Tanaden Magance Talauci Na Gwamnatin Tarayya”, Dr. Bashir explained that dealings with bank interest are forbidden in Islam. He also appealed to the legislators to ensure that amendments are effected to banking laws, so that Nigerian Muslims are not left out when it comes to enjoying Federal Government's poverty eradication/alleviation packages. The imam equally called on Muslim organizations such as Jamaa'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) to wake up and contribute their quota towards the realization of interest-free banking. Also speaking, a renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, enjoined Muslims, especially youth, to stop being lazy and start with any legitimate career opportunity at their disposal, no matter how menial it may look. The sheikh explained that one could even begin as a waste disposer, stressing that as long as what one is doing is halaal(legitimate), Allah can bless it. The scholar also urged Muslims to be more conscious of their duty to Allah in relation to the payment of zakah (aims). Some of the beneficiaries at Goni Kachallari Camp, who spoke to our correspondent were full of praises to the Union, saying the intervention would go a long way in cushioning the hardship being experienced. The Camp Chairman, Mallam Dunama Ngumtai, said the visit by the ASUU team had enliven the camp as the people will now have something to eat for the rest of the fasting period. He added that: “Your visit has brought back life and hope to the people in this camp. Believe me, many of us have been starved and malnourished, but, those items you brought would enliven the settlement. We are indeed grateful to you.” Ngumtai said since the establishment of this camp more than a year now, they have never gotten food of such magnitude. Everyone here has gotten enough that will last for at least two weeks. Alhamdulillahi, we pray Almighty Allah to reward you abundantly, Malam Ngumtai said. It was observed that each household was given the materials based on the number of persons in the family. The distribution was done personally by the officials of the Union with the support from ASUU members from University of Maiduguri. After the distribution of the materials, the team went round to inspect some other camps within the metropolis.
